Built to Create Opportunity
Bidwell Training Center began on Bidwell Street in Pittsburgh’s Manchester neighborhood. Its first programs provided training in construction trades such as carpentry, bricklaying, plumbing, and electrical work.
These programs reflected the jobs available at the time, but BTC was never defined by one industry. From the beginning, its broader purpose was to help local residents prepare for stable, rewarding careers as Pittsburgh’s workforce changed.
Evolving With Pittsburgh
As Pittsburgh’s economy changed, BTC expanded into healthcare, laboratory science, culinary arts, and technology, working with industry and community leaders to develop relevant training.
In 1986, BTC moved to Metropolitan Street, where new classrooms, laboratories, and kitchens created more opportunities for hands-on learning. Harbor Gardens and the Drew Mathieson Greenhouse later expanded the campus further.
Bidwell Training Center Today
Today, BTC offers hands-on career training shaped by employer needs and Pittsburgh’s workforce. Eligible Pennsylvania residents can receive no-cost training, along with advising, career services, externships, and other support.
More than five decades later, BTC remains committed to accessible training and every student’s potential.
